Learning Outcome #5: Know and Apply Various Disciplinary Models to Manage Student Behavior
"Almost all surveys of teacher effectiveness," according to Brophy and Evertson, "report that classroom management skills are of primary importance in determining teacher success, whether it is measured by student learning or by ratings." Classroom management includes the organization of students, classroom time, and materials so that the learning process can take place uninterrupted. Students need structure and consistency so that they can feel comfortable in their surroundings (Wong 83). Students need to be proactive with the discipline process and see the benefits to having such a system in place; this will allow students to see the value in the rules of the classroom. Discipline procedures need to be in place, known by the students, and implemented when a student breaks the rules.
I constantly walk around the room when students are working so that they are reminded of my presence and refocus on the task at hand. If students become a distraction to the class or make it impossible for other students to learn, I remove them from the classroom. Depending on the brevity of the situation, I will either send the student out into the hall to sit for a few minutes until I can confer with them after the other students are settled into their work, or I will send the student to the administrative office. I believe that all students are capable of being positive contributors to the class environment, but I do not think that any student has the right to distract other students from learning.
