Learning Outcome #13: Demonstrate Sufficient Technology Skills and the Ability to Integrate Technology into Classroom Teaching/Learning.
Technology has become an integral part of learning for students in the twenty-first century. Technology changes interrelationships among teachers, schools, and communities by allowing more transparency and more interaction between each. Kincheloe, Slattery, and Steinberg say that "empowered teachers engage students in the analysis of what technology enables us to do and what it keeps us from doing" (259). Students are now capable of shaping their world through the interactive qualities of the web; the world is becoming flatter, and students need these skills to survive in an age of international competition for jobs. Even the basic jobs in America require some working knowledge of technology because many businesses utilize technology in their daily operations. Students need to understand that Web 2.0 allows us to shape the world in which we live, but it can also lead to our future demise through overexposure and the heavy influence of outside sources such as the media.
Students need to be given the skills to identify how credible sources on the Internet are, and how to use the sources in an appropriate manner. Plagiarism has become much more prevalent; students need to be aware of what plagiarism is and how to avoid committing an act of plagiarism.
I use the SmartBoard daily in my classroom; it allows the students to interact with technology, and the engaging qualities of the SmartBoard allow the students to learn. According to Jackson, Gaudet, McDaniel, and Brammer, "The use of technology should not occur without thinking about how people learn" (75). Incorporating the multiple intelligences into teaching has become an easier process through technology in the classroom. Students are more engaged, and there are a plethora of ways to accommodate the eight different intelligences (Youtube clips, interactive games through the SmartBoard, interactive quizzes and tests, etc). As quoted from The Six Million Dollar Man: "We have the technology." We just need to continue to find ways to use it in a meaningful and engaging ways.
